A and P license for dummies

An A and P license is actually not a license at all. Technically it is a certificate issued by the

Federal Aviation Administration. Sometimes it is called a "rating". In any case, there are 3 basic ways to get your A and P license.
  • 30 months of military experience, note that they do not count time in training. After the time has been reached in the appropriate military occupational specialty, then the FAA can allow for the applicant to take the A and P tests.
  • Formal traditional schooling from an FAA Part 147 approved school. Typically these classes last around 2 years.
  • Worth experience under the supervision of a certificated mechanic. Make sure all relevant information is documented. The FAA will need proof that the work was actually performed.
If you are interested in becoming an Aircraft mechanic, it is a wise move to get the A and P license. Licensed mechanics generally earn more than non licensed.
